I've always been fascinated by Francis Copolla's portrayal of surfing in his masterpiece Apocalypse Now. So I set out to create a vintage comics-esque illustration of the Air Cavalry's helicopter attack in the Mekong River which included a surfing foray by the troops. Instigated by Colonel Kilgore, the surfers rode waves amid exploding enemy mortar rounds.
I made a Grease Pencil sketch and used Blender to establish the angle and perspective I wanted for the illustration.
